Self in relationship (2004)

Abstract

(from the chapter) one of the most significant trends in recent inquiry into self has been toward social constructionism # as is increasingly evidenced, what have traditionally been viewed as both mental and behavioural events are now held to be historically situated constructions emerging from social process # increasing emphasis on human agency and on persons (as opposed to structure) have fortified this movement # when the implications of constructionism are extended we find ourselves on the frontier of a new and challenging conception of self, one that shifts the locus of understanding from individual selves to the relationships in which selves are made possible.
