Bayesian benchmarks for fast and frugal heuristics (1999)

Abstract

(from the chapter) Describes the changing relationship between Bayesian models and theories of human reasoning during the past 3 centuries. The authors describe the Bayesian paradigm, propose 3 Bayesian models as competitors of both the less demonic linear regression and the all-too-innocent Take The Best, and discuss the issue of how to measure the complexity of inference strategies and the role of Bayesian models as benchmarks for fast and frugal heuristics. Throughout the chapter, the following question is addressed: What is the proper role of probability theory in the psychology of fast and frugal heuristics? A limerick by Ward Edwards (1997) created in response to the comparison between Take The Best and Bayes is appended. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)
