Ecological rationality and its contents: Discussion (2000)
Authors
Abstract
Discusses the points raised by D. E. Over (2000) in his review of the book edited by G. Gigerenzer and P. M. Todd (see record 1999-04366-000, hereafter known as Simple Heuristics). Over revealed, and the present authors expand on, certain confusions about the present authors' research program. The central concept of Simple Heuristics is that of ecological rationality : how decision mechanisms can produce useful inferences by exploiting the structure of information in their environment. According to the present authors, Over focused on some topics not intended to be covered by the book, including massive modularity, evolutionary psychology, accurate representations of the world, frequency vs probability formats for information, and higher-level reasoning. All of these points are addressed here. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2000 APA, all rights reserved)
